Day 8

Here it is, my first ever blog post. I know successful hair and makeup artists carefully curate a visual blog on the regular. And I’ve been meaning to get around to writing about skincare, brands, or techniques to drive interest to my site. But I’m busy, man.

My husband and I have two young girls who keep us running. Before Covid-19, I was an on-location hair and makeup artist for weddings mostly and other special events occasionally. I was booked most weekends and some weekday evenings. Then during the week, I was a Preschool Teacher at their school. What started as an intermittent, little substitute job turned into a being offered a more permanent role. I love working with the kids, and have always said if I hadn’t fallen into doing hair, I would surely have been a kindergarten teacher. I guess there’s no better time for a career change, am I right?

After Covid-19, all my upcoming weddings cancelled or postponed. And rightfully so. Smart and cautious couples made new arrangements, protecting their families and friends by letting go of their specific date-dreams. Other clients decided to keep their same wedding dates or push them only slightly into the near future. Don’t be like those clients. Stay home. Stay safe.

A week or so before her fourth birthday, my littlest wanted to do a makeup video. I had recently sorted, cleaned, and reorganized my entire working kit and back stock of makeup, hair tools, and products. I pulled out all the supplies I’ve been hanging onto to play with later but never had enough time. I even pulled out some old wigs I had inherited from my step-grandmother. Maybe make some of those sped up styling videos like on Instagram? I considered making my own makeup tutorials like so many other artists. What would set me apart? What would make my videos more interesting than all the others? I decided to set my youngest daughter in the director’s chair I use for my makeup clients, shone The Makeup Light onto her little face, and hit record.

She had already begun smudging her face with black eyeshadow from an old gratis Lancôme eye shadow palette. Or was it Esteé Lauder? I was especially impressed with her commitment to covering her entire face with only one SS62 Short Shader Brush I received in an old Ipsy bag.

So here’s my little monster getting ready to meet her friends at the Chimney Sweep Ball. Thanks, Dad, for that little gem. Stay Beautiful! #staybeautiful
